The chromatographic behaviour of some hydrophilic dyes and dye intermediates on thin layers of strong and weak ion exchangers
H.S. FREEMAN*, Z. HAO, W.-N. HSU (*North Carolina State Univ., Dep. Textile Eng., Chem. and Sci., Box 8302 Raleigh, North Carolina 27695-8302, USA)

      J. Liquid Chromatogr. 12, 919-935 (1989). Investigation of chromatographic behavior of some polar organic dyes and dye intermediates on thin layer of various forms of cationic and anionic exchange resins, indicating the great effect of the stationary ion and mobile ion of both types of exchangers on both level of tailing and Rf values of the adsorbed compounds.

E.J. CAVALLI*, C. GUINCHAROL, (*Lab. de Chim. Anal., UFR de Med. et de Pharm., Place Saint-Jacques, 25030 Besançon Cedex, France)

Chromatographia 37, 107-109 (1993). Study of the influence of the distance between the solvent entry and the starting zone position (Z0) on the average plate height. This factor was found to be of major importance and be optimized. The Guiochon and Siouffi model greatly underestimates the plate height for low values of the starting zone position.

Is it possible to predict precisely solute biological activity using planar chromatography? Sz
      M. JANICKA, L. KWIETNIEWSKI, J. MATYSIAK, (M. Curie-Sklodowska Univ., Fac. of Chem., M. Curie-Sklodowska Sq. 3, 20-031 Lublin and Univ. of Agriculture, Dept. of Chem., Akademicka 15, 20-950 Lublin, Poland)

Nyiredy, A. Kakuk (eds.): Planar Chromatography 2000, Lillafüred, Hungary, 24-26 June 2000, Res. Inst. for Med. Plants, p. 237-248. Determination of log kw values seem to be very useful for description of biological activity of organic substances (antifungal activity of benzanilides). Very good correlation between log kw values and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for all benzanilides and dermatophytes is observed. HPTLC of 9 benzanilides on RP-18 with methanol and its aqueous solutions. Quantitation by absorbance measurement at 325nm.

      J. AOAC Int. 88, 1516 (2005). Short overview on the use of densitometry in thin-layer chromatography as one of the most active areas in TLC research. See also the biennial reviews of Planar Chromatography by J. Sherma in Anal. Chem 74, 2653-2662 (2002) and 76, 3251-3261 (2004).

Application of the chromatographic binary solution model to partition TLC
      T. KOWALSKA

Chromatographia 20, 434-438 (1985). TLC of higher fatty acids having an even number of carbon atoms in their molecule (C10 to C16) on silica impregnated with n-octadecane with a) acetic acid - methanol -water 85:1O:5, and b) propionic acid - methanol - water 85:10:5. Detection by spraying with saturated aq. solution of bromocresol green. Investigation of the validity of the chromatographic binary solution model.

Linkage between separation of Cu2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ on TLC and crystal field theory
      S. ERGÜL (Department of Science Education, Faculty of Education, Ondokuz Mayis University 55200, Atakum Yerleskesi-Samsun, Turkey)

      J. Chromatogr. Sci. 46 (10), 907-911 (2008). Examination of M(DEDTC)2 (M = Cu, Co, or Ni) and M(PyDTC)2 (M = Cu or Co) complexes prepared by reactions of sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (NaDEDTC) and ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate (NH4PyDTC) with metal (II) nitrates. Qualitative analysis and separation using TLC systems in the literature. Reexamination and discussion of the already known separation behaviour of the mentioned metal cations and their complexes in the context of relation to the crystal field theory (CFT) and TLC. Based on the chromatographic data it was found that CFT is closely related to the TLC separation of these metal cations and their complexes. This study is useful in understanding the linkage between the CFT of coordination chemistry and the chromatographic parameters, e.g., hRf value and theoretical plate numbers of the complexes.
