For quality control, TLC on silica gel 1) for Gastrodia elata Blume and the standard gastrodine, with chloroform – ethyl acetate – methanol – formic acid 80:10:30:1, detection by spraying with 10 % phosphomolybdic acid in ethanol and heating at 110 °C until the zones are visible in daylight; 2) for Epimedium davidii Franch and the standard icariin, with benzene – methanol – glacial acetic acid 45:8:4, detection by spraying with 10 % aluminium chloride in ethanol and letting stand for 40 min at room temperature, evaluation under UV 366 nm; 3) for Salvia miltiorrhiza and the standard protocatechuic aldehyde, with chloroform – acetone – formic acid 25:10:4, detection by exposure to ammonia vapors for 15 min and viewing under UV 254 nm. Tiaojing Huayu Wan pills are a herbal TCM preparation for treatment of menstrual disorders, menstrual abdominal pain, amenorrhea caused by vital energy stagnation and blood stasis. For quality control, TLC on silica gel 1) for Rhizoma Cyperi, with benzene – ethyl acetate – glacial acetic acid 92:5:5, detection under UV 254 nm; 2) for Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, and the standard ferulic acid with benzene – ethyl acetate – formic acid 40:10:1, detection under UV 366 nm. Quantification of paeoniflorin by HPLC.

J. Planar Chromatogr. 27, 181-185 (2014). HPTLC of plumbagin in the root of Plumbago zeylanica on silica gel with n-butanol - chloroform - petroleum 2:3:1. Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 268 nm. The hRF value for plumbagin was 58. Linearity was in the range of 225-675 ng/zone. The intermediate/interday/intra-day precision were below 2 % (n=3). The LOD and LOQ were 30 and 90 ng/zone, respectively.

Ziyin Mingmu pian tablet is herbal TCM for promoting blood circulation which is used for the treatment of primary pigmentary degeneration of retina and other eye diseases. For quality control, TLC on silica gel 1) for Paeonia suffruticosa Andr., with cyclohexane – ethyl acetate – glacial acetic acid 40:10:1, detection by spraying with 2 % vanillin in sulfuric acid – ethanol 1:10 and heating at 105 °C until the zones are visible in daylight and under UV 366 nm; 2) for Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc., with toluene – ethyl acetate – formic acid 40:8:1, detection by spraying with 10 % sulfuric acid in ethanol and heating at 105 °C until the zones are visible in daylight; 3) for Notopterygium incisum, with cyclohexane – benzene - ethyl acetate 2:1:1, detection by spraying with 1 % vanillin in sulfuric acid – ethanol 1:4 and under UV 366 nm; 4) Acorus tatarinowii, with petroleum ether (60-90 °C) – ethyl acetate 4:1, detection under UV 366 nm. Quantification of salvianolic acid B by HPLC.

Zaodi Anshen Wan pill is herbal TCM for treatment of neurasthenia, fatigue syndrome, depression, insomnia, dizziness and tinnitus, palpitation, etc. For quality control, HPTLC on silica gel 1) for Ziziphus jujuba Mill. var. spinosa, with water-saturated n-butanol, detection by spraying with 1 % vanillin in sulfuric acid – ethanol 1:4, evaluation under UV 366 nm; 2) for Radix polygoni multiflori preparata and the standards emodin and physcion, with petroleum ether (30-60 ˚C) – ethyl formate – formic acid 15:5:1, detection by exposure to ammonia vapors, evaluation under UV 366 nm. Analysis of Schisandra chinensis, schisandrin, deoxyschizandrin and gamma-schizandrin B by HPLC.

J. Planar Chromatogr. 27, 460-465 (2014). HPTLC of (1) schisandrin, (2) gomisin B, (3) deoxyschisandrin and (4) gomisin N on silica gel with toluene – ethyl acetate – methanol 6:1:1. Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 225 nm. The hRF values of (1) to (4) were 20, 32, 61 and 72, respectively. Linearity was between 10 and 500 ng/zone for each substance. The intermediate intra-day and inter-day precision was below 3 % (n=5) for (1) to (4). The LOD and LOQ were 2.0 and 6.6 ng/zone for (1) and (2), and 2.5 and 8.2 for (3) and (4), respectively. Recovery for (1) to (4) were in the range of 97.2-102.3 %.

HPTLC of (1) asiatic acid, (2) asiaticoside and (3) madecassoside in whole plant of Centella asiatica on silica gel with toluene – ethyl acetate – formic acid 5:5:1 for (1) and n-butanol - ethyl acetate - water 4:1:5 for (2) and (3). Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 600 nm. The hRF values of (1) to (3) were 52, 48 and 45, respectively. Linearity was in the range of 100-1000 ng/zone for (1) to (3). The intermediate precision was below 2 % (n=3) for (1) to (3). The LOD and LOQ were 40 and 100 ng/zone, respectively, for (1) to (3). Recovery for (1) to (3) were between 97.1 and 101.2 %.

Guide Chinese Med. 17, 85-87 (2014). Zhituo Shenfa Wan pills are a TCM preparation or the treatment of seborrheic alopecia and Alopecia areata. For quality control, TLC on silica gel 1) for Angelica sinensis and Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort, with n-hexane – ethyl acetate 19:1, detection at UV 366 nm; 2) for Atractylodes lancea (Thunb.) DC., with petroleum ether (60-90 °C) – ethyl acetate 19:1, detection by spraying with 5 % p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde in sulfuric acid – ethanol 1:4 and evaluation under white light; 3) for Corydalis yanhusuo W. T. Wang ex Z. Y. Su et C. Y. Wu and the standard tetrahydropalmatine, with n-hexane – chloroform – methanol – triethylamine 10:6:1:1, detection by exposure to iodine vapors until the zones are clearly visualized, evaluation under white and at UV 366 nm; (4) for Pericarpium Citri reticulatae and the standard hesperidin, with chloroform – acetone – methanol 5:1:1, detection by spraying with 3 % aluminium trichloride in ethanol and heating mildly until the zones are visible under white and at UV 366 nm.
