Shuangxiang Hewei capsules are a herbal TCM preparation and contain Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. as the key drug, which is used for treatment of anorexia, vomiting, gastric distention, and limb weakness. For quality control through identification of the key drug Pogostemon cablin, TLC of the drug extracts and the standard patchouli alcohol on silica gel with cyclohexane – acetone 10:3, detection by spraying with 5 % vanillin in sulfuric acid – ethanol 1:4 and heating at 105 °C until the zones are visible in daylight.

HPTLC of umbelliferone in the leaves of eleven Juniperus species on silica gel with n-hexane - ethyl acetate 7:3 in the first run and dichloromethane - diethyl ether 4:1 in the second run. Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 326 nm. The hRf of umbelliferone was 30. Linearity was between 10 and 80 ng/zone. LOD and LOQ were 7 and 23 ng/zone. Average recovery (by standard addition) was 96.3 %. Intermediate intra- and inter-day precision (n = 6) was below 7 %.

For quality control, TLC on silica gel 1) for Capsicum annuum and the standard capsaicin, with petroleum ether (30-60 °C) – ethanol 9:1, detection under UV 254 nm; 2) for Zingiber officinale Rosc., with petroleum ether (60-90 °C) – ethyl acetate 2:1, detection by spraying with 2 % p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde in 40 % sulfuric acid in ethanol and heating at 105 °C until the zones are visible in daylight; 3) for Heracleum hemsleyanum, with n-hexane – toluene – ethyl acetate 2:1:1, detection under UV 366 nm.

HPTLC of betulinic acid (1), 24beta-ethylcholesta-5,22E,25-triene-3beta-ol (2) and lupeol (3) in Clerodendrum phlomidis on silica gel with chloroform - methanol 49:1. Detection by dipping into vanillin - sulfuric acid reagent (vanillin - ethanol - sulfuric acid 1:95:5, w/V/V), followed by heating at 110 ºC for 3 min. Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 600 nm. The hRF values for (1) to (3) were 30, 52 and 70. Linearity was in the range of 300-1500 ng/mL. The intermediate/interday/intra-day precisions were below 2 % (n=5). The LOD and LOQ were 22 and 74 ng/zone for (1), 20 and 66 ng/zone for (2) and 30 and 100 ng/zone for (3), respectively. Average recovery was 99.0 % for (1), 98.5 % for (2) and 98.2 % for (3).

Huaiyu Wan pill is a herbal TCM for treating bleeding of rectum polyp, anal fissure, hemorrhage due to ulcerative colitis etc. For quality control, TLC on silica gel 1) for Gardenia jasminoides Ellis and the standard gardenoside, with ethyl acetate – acetone – formic acid – water 5:5:1:1, detection by spraying with 10 % sulfuric acid in ethanol and heating at 110 °C until the zones are visible in daylight; 2) for flowers and buds of Sophora japonica L. and the standard rutin, with ethyl acetate – formic acid – water 8:1:1, detection by spraying with 1 % aluminum trichloride in ethanol, detection under UV 366 nm; 3) for Paeonia suffruticosa Andr. and the standard paeonol, with cyclohexane - ethyl acetate 3:1, detection by spraying with 2 % ferric chloride in ethanol and heating until the zones are visible in daylight. Quantification of rutin by HPLC.

Zhiqiao Jianwei Keli granule is a herbal TCM for treatment of stagnated heat of liver and stomach, stomach pain and stomach cramps etc. For quality control, TLC on silica gel 1) for Fructus aurantii, with the lower phase of chloroform – methanol – water 13:6:2, detection by spraying with 3 % aluminum trichloride in ethanol and heating at 105 °C for 5 min and evaluation under UV 366 nm; 2) for Corydalis yanhusuo W. T. Wang ex Z. Y. Su et C. Y. Wu, with toluene – acetone 9:2, detection by exposure to iodine vapors for 3 min and evaluation under UV 366 nm; 3) for Forsythia suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl, with chloroform – methanol – glacial acetic acid 17:2:1, detection by spraying with 5 % vanillin in sulfuric acid – ethanol 1:4 and heating at 105 °C until the zones are visible in daylight. For determination of tetrahydropalmatine, TLC on silica gel with toluene – acetone 9:2 with chamber saturation for 30 min, detection by exposure to iodine vapors for 3 min. Evaluation under UV 366 nm and quantification by densitometric measurement at 343 nm using external standard calibration. Validation by investigating the linearity range of the calibration curve (55-330 ng/zone, r=0.996, n=6), the stability within 6 hours (%RSD 1.9 %, n=7), the precision (%RSD 1.3 %, n=6), and the repeatability (%RSD 0.8 %, n=6). Recovery was 98.0 % (%RSD 1.9 %, n=5).

Detection by spraying with 10 % methanol solution of sulfuric acid, followed by heating at 110 °C for 20 min. Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement between 320 and 700 nm.
