Fufang Hanfangji Keli granule is a herbal TCM preparation for treatment of acute and chronic hepatitis, fatty liver, gallbladder disease, and for reducing high total serum cholesterol and aortic atherosclerotic plaques. For quality control, the key drug of the preparation, Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, is analysed based on its content of tanshinone IIA. TLC on silica gel with petroleum ether (60-90 °C) – ethyl acetate 4:1. Quantification of tanshinone IIA by HPLC.

      A simple analysis of fructooligosaccharides in two medicinal plants by high-performance thin-layer chromatography

      J. Planar Chromatogr. 27, 245-250 (2014). HPTLC of fructooligosaccharides DP3-DP9 in Morinda officinalis on silica gel with n-butanol - isopropanol - water - acetic acid 7:5:2:1. Detection by spraying with 1-naphthol–sulfuric acid reagent, followed by heating at 110 ºC for 3 min. Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 585 nm. The hRF values for DP3 to DP9 were between 20 and 70. Linearity was in the range of 150-1050 ng/zone for DP3, 137-962 ng/zone for DP4 and DP5, 131-919 ng/zone for DP6 and DP9, 144-862 ng/zone for DP7 and 156-1094 ng/zone for DP8. The intermediate/interday/intra-day precisions were below 5 % (n=6). Average recoveries for DP3 to DP9 were between 91.4 and 99.0 %.

Gangmei Ganmaoling keli granule is herbal TCM for the treatment of colds, upper respiratory tract infections etc. For quality control TLC on silica gel 1) for Holly roots, with toluene – ethyl acetate – glacial acetic acid 10:3:1, detection under UV 366 nm and under daylight after exposing to ammonia vapors; 2) for Dendranthema indicum and the standard buddleoside, with ethyl acetate – butanone – chloroform – formic acid – water 15:15:6:4:1, detection by spraying with 2 % aluminum trichloride in ethanol and heating until the zones are visible under UV 365 nm; 3) for Isatis tinctoria and the standard arginine, with n-butanol – glacial acetic acid – water 19:5:5, detection by spraying with 2 % ninhydrin in acetone and heating at 105 ˚C until the zones are visible in daylight.

      High-performance thin-layer chromatographic quantification of some essential oils from Anethum graveolens extracts

      J. Planar Chromatogr. 27, 33-37 (2014). HPTLC of alpha-phellandrene (1) and beta-pinene (2) in Anethum graveolens L. on silica gel with ether - dichloromethane 3:7. Detection by spraying with vanillin reagent (15 g vanillin in 250 mL ethanol and 2.5 mL concentrated sulfuric acid), followed by heating at 120 °C. Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 600 nm. Linearity was in the range of 40-270 µg/zone for (1) and 100-360 µg/zone for (2). LOD and LOQ were 6.6 and 65.8 µg/zone for (1) and 12.9 and 88.7 µg/zone for (2), respectively. Recoveries were in the range of 95.2-98.8 % for (1) and 97.1-101.4 % for (2). Intermediate/interday/intra-day precision was below 4 % (n=6).

Weile Jiaonang capsule is herbal TCM for the treatment of gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, chronic gastritis, etc. For quality control, TLC on silica gel 1) for Bletilla striata, with petroleum ether (30-60 °C) - ethyl acetate - formic acid 15:5:1, detection under UV 366 nm; 2) for Fritillaria thunbergii Miq., with benzene – acetone 1:1, detection by spraying with a solution of 0.85 g basic bismuth nitrate in 10 mL glacial acetic acid and 40 mL water, evaluation in daylight; 3) for Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch., with petroleum ether (60-90 °C) – toluene – ethyl acetate – glacial acetic acid 20:40:14:1, detection by spraying with 5 % phosphomolybdic acid n-hydrate in ethanol and heating at 105 °C until the zones were visible in daylight. After quality authentication, the herbal TCM preparation was prescribed for 85 cases of patients to survey its efficacy. The results indicated that the preparation has significant effect towards the mentioned diseases, and that the method is suitable for the quality control.

The hRF values of (1) and (2) were 24 and 54, respectively. Linearities were between 100 and 500 ng/zone for (1) and between 200 and 1000 ng/zone for (2). The intermediate precisions were below 1 % (n=6) for both, (1) and (2). The LOD and LOQ were 40 and 80 ng/zone for (1) and 90 and 200 ng/zone for (2), respectively. Average recoveries for (1) and (2) were 99.2 and 99.3 %, respectively.

Sangao Tiaohe Wan pill is TCM compound for the treatment of high blood pressure, high blood lipids, diabetes mellitus, vasculitis, etc. For quality control, TLC on silica gel (1) for Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge and tanshinone ll A with benzene – ethyl acetate 19:1, detection under white light; (2) for Panax pseudoginseng, notoginsenoside R1, ginsenoside Rb1 and ginsenoside Rg1 with chloroform - ethyl acetate – methanol – water 15:40:22:10, detection by spraying with 10 % sufuric acid in ethanol and heating at 105 °C until the spots were visible.
