      Quantification of bioactive marker beta-amyrin by validated high-performance thin-layer chromatographic–densitometric method in different species of Maytenus grown in Saudi Arabia

      J. Planar Chromatogr. 26, 475-479 (2013). HPTLC of beta-amyrin in the aerial parts of Maytenus obscura and Maytenus parviflora on silica gel with hexane - ethyl acetate 3:1. Detection by spraying with p-anisaldehyde, followed by heating at 105 ºC for 10 min. Quantification by absorbance measurement at 550 nm. The hRf of beta-amyrin was 38. Linearity was in the range of 10-100 ng/zone. LOD and LOQ were 9 and 27 ng/zone. Recovery was in the range of 99.3-99.7 %. Intermediate/interday/intra-day precision was below 2 % (n=6).

      Chinese J. of Northern Pharmacy 10 (6), 8-10 (2013). Radix Bupleuri is the dried root of Bupleurum chinense Dc. and Bupleurum scorzonerifolium Willd. (Umbelliferae). The crude drug has antipyretic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects, and reduces blood lipid levels. The quality of the drug differs depending on its origin and harvesting time. For quality control, TLC on silica gel 1) with ethyl acetate – ethanol – water 8:2:1; and 2) with the lower phase of chloroform – ethyl acetate – methanol – water 15:40:22:10 after laying up at 10 °C. Detection by spraying with 2 % p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyhyde in 40 % sulfuric acid and heating at 60 °C until the zones are visible in daylight and under UV 366 nm. Identification by comparison with the standard Radix Stellaviae. Quantification of total Radix Stellaviae by UV spectrophotometry with p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyhyde – phosphoric acid colorization method at 545 nm. Quantification of Radix Stellaviae A and D by HPLC.

For quality control, TLC on silica gel 1) for Tetradium ruticarpum, with cyclohexane – ethyl acetate – methanol – triethylamine 15:5:1:1, detection by spraying with 10 % sulfuric acid in ethanol and heating at 105 °C for 4 min and viewing under UV 366 nm; 2) for Pogostemon cablin, with petroleum ether (60-90 °C) – ethyl acetate 19:2, detection by spraying with 1 % vanillin in sulfuric acid – ethanol 1:4 and heating at 105 °C until the zones are visible in daylight; 3) for Fructus Amomi and the standard bornyl acetate, with cyclohexane – ethyl acetate 22:1, detection by spraying with 5 % vanillin in sulfuric acid – ethanol 1:4 and heating at 105 °C until the zones are visible in daylight.

TLC of the extracts and standards (+)-tetrandrine and fangchinoline on silica gel with cyclo hexane – chloroform – acetone – methanol 10:6:1:1, detection by spraying with (bismuth subnitrate – glacial acetic acid – water 1:10:40) – potassium iodide – glacial acetic acid – water 1:1:4:20. Quantification of (+)-tetrandrine and fangchinoline by HPLC.

HPTLC of fructose (1), glucuronic acid (1), galacturonic acid (3), rhamnose (4), xylose (5), arabinose (6), and galactose (7) in the seeds of Ocimum basilicum on silica gel with isopropyl acetate - ethyl acetate - ethanol - water 50:40:10:1. Detection by dipping into aniline diphenylamine o-phosphoric acid reagent (20 % of o-phosphoric acid [85%] added to 1:1 mixture of 2 % solutions of diphenylamine and aniline in acetone), followed by heating at 110 ºC for 5 min. Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 630 nm except for (4) which was determined at 370 nm. The hRF values for (1) to (7) were 80, 58, 51, 40, 25, 18 and 9, respectively.

HPTLC of kaempferol (1), rutin (2), and quercetin (3) in marketed formulations containing_x000D_ Phyllanthus niruri (Bhuiamla) and Emblica officinalis (Amla) on silica gel with chloroform - methanol - formic acid 82:15:10. Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 254 nm. The hRF values for (1) to (3) were 69, 53 and 12. Linearity was in the range of 21-840 ng/zone for (1), 56-1008 ng/zone for (2) and 60-1800 ng/zone for (3), respectively. The intermediate/interday/intra-day precisions were below 1 % (n=3). The LOD and LOQ were 21 and 63 ng/zone for (1), 56 and 168 ng/zone for (2) and 300 and 600 ng/zone for (3), respectively. Recoveries for (1) to (3) were obtained in the range of 81.8-119.0 %.

      J. of China Pharm. 27 (7), 722-724 (2013). Xihuang Wan pill is a herbal TCM prescribed for treatment and adjuvant therapy of various cancers. Huoxue Zhitong San powder is a herbal TCM prescribed for traumatic injury and ecchymoma. In the drug market fraud rosin was found to be added to the key ingredient olibanum. For quality control, HPTLC of the sample extracts and the standards acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA), 11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (KBA), beta-boswellic acid (beta-BA), acetyl-beta-boswellic acid (beta-ABA), and abietic acid (LOD=1.0 µg), on silica gel with toluene – ethyl acetate – heptane – formic acid 80:20:10:3 with chamber saturation for 20 min, detection 1) under UV 254 nm and UV 366 nm; 2) by spraying with a fresh solution of anisaldehyde – sulfuric acid – acetic acid 1:10:1000 and heating at 105 °C until the zones were visible in daylight. Verification of abietic acid from added rosin by HPLC. The method was used for the analysis of 63 batches of Xihuang Wan pills sampled from 13 pharmaceutical factories and 10 batches of Huoxue Zhitong San powder from 4 factories.
