Demonstration by applying to real life samples indicated that the procedure was suited for quality control.

Paracetamol and chlorphenamine maleate granule are an anti cold medicine effective for cold induced nasal congestion, headache, sore throat, fever, etc. Artificial bezoar is one of the main ingredients and bilirubin is the key effective component in the medicine. For quality control, TLC of the extracts and bilirubin on silica gel with isooctane – ethyl acetate – glacial acetic acid 11:5:3, detection under white light. Quantitative determination of bilirubin by UV spectrophotometry. Demonstration by applying to real life samples from three pharmaceutical factories indicated that the method was suited for the quality control of the medicine.

Yinhuang Qingre Jiaonang capsule is a TCM compound used for the treatment of respiratory tract infection, acute and chronic tonsillitis, sore throat, pneumonia, periodontitis, conjunctivitis, influenza virus infection, etc. For the quality control, HPTLC of the drug and berberine hydrochloride on silica gel (1) for Cortex Phellodendri Chinensis and Coptis chinensis Franch. with benzene – ethyl acetate – isopropanol – methanol – concentrated ammonia 12:6:3:3:1, detection by exposure to ammonia vapor; (2) for Flos Lonicerae Confusae with butyl acetate – formic acid – water 14:5:5; (3) for Fructus Aurantii (A) with ethyl acetate – formic acid – water 100:17:13 up to 3 cm, and then, (B) with toluene - ethyl acetate – formic acid – water 20:10:1:1 up to 8 cm; for all (1-3), detection at UV 366 nm. The method had been applied routinely and proved to be suited for the quality control of the medicine.

The hRF value of erythrocentaurin was 54. Linearity was in the range of 200-1500 ng/zone. LOD and LOQ were 60 and 180 ng/zone, respectively. Intra-day and inter-day precision was below 1 % (n=3). Recoveries were between 97 and 99 %.

TLC of (1) citicoline sodium in the presence of its (2) alkaline degradation products in pharmaceutical oral solution on silica gel with ammonia - ethyl acetate - triethylamine 12:7:1. Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 272 nm. The hRF value was 35 for (1) and 10 for (2). Linearity for (1) was between 0.6 and 2.2 µg/zone. The intraday precision was 0.2 % and interday precision was 1.2 % for (1). The LOD and LOD of (1) were 41 ng/zone and 237 ng/zone, respectively.

HPTLC of caffeic acid (1), vanillic acid (2), syringic acid (3) and kaempferol (4) in flowers and flower buds of Bauhinia purpurea L., Bauhinia variegata L., and Bauhinia acuminata L. on silica gel with toluene - ethyl acetate - formic acid 5:4:1. Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 350 nm. The hRF values for (1) to (4) were 54, 61, 57 and 64. Linearity was in the range of 100-700 ng/zone for (1) to (4). LOD and LOQ were 40 and 100 ng/zone for all four substances. The intermediate precision was below 1.8 % (n=3). Recovery ranged from 97-99 % for (1), 97-100 % for (2), 99-100 % for (3) and 98-99 % for (4).

Detection by dipping into a solution of p-dimethyl aminobenzaldehyde in methanolic hydrochloric acid for 2 s, followed by heating at 110 °C for 3 min. Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 515 nm. The hRF value for protodioscin was 31. Linearity was in the range of 400-1400 ng/zone. LOD and LOQ were 100 and 400 ng/zone. The intermediate precision was below 5.1 % (n=3). Average recovery was 101 %.

For quality control, TLC for (1) Codonopsis pilosula (Franch.) Nannf., on silica gel with n-butanol – glacial acetic acid – water 14:2:1, detection by spraying with 10 % sulfuric acid in ethanol and heating at 100 °C until the zones are clearly visualized, viewing in daylight; (2) Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz., on silica gel with petroleum ether (60-90 °C) – ethyl acetate 10:1, detection by spraying with 5 % dimethylaminobenzaldehyde in sulfuric acid – ethanol 1:10 and heating until the zones are visualized in daylight; (3) Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf, on silica gel with toluene – ethyl acetate – formic acid 40:10:1, detection under UV 366 nm; (4) Corydalis yanhusuo W. T. Wang ex Z. Y. Su et C. Y., on silica gel with toluene – acetone 9:2, detection under UV 366 nm; (5) for Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge., on silica gel with toluene – chloroform – ethyl acetate – methanol - formic acid 4:6:8:1:4, detection under UV 254 nm.
