TLC of metal dithiocarbamates: antimonic(III) dipentyldithiocarbamate (1), zinc dipentyldithiocarbamate (2), zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate (3), ferric(III) dipentyldithiocarbamate (4) and lead(II) dipentyldithiocarbamate (5) on RP-18 with 2-propanol - water 10:1. Detection by spraying with sodium azide 2 % - potassium iodide 0.01 M - starch solution 1 % pH 6.0 and exposure to iodine vapour for 15 s. Linearity for compounds (1) to (5) ranged 100-2000, 50-1000, 50-1000, 50-1000 and 100-3000 pmol/zone, respectively. LOD was in the range of 10 pmol/zone for the compounds.

DC., on silica gel with chloroform – methanol – ammonia 150:5:1, detection under UV 366 nm; 4) for Saussurea woodiana Hemsl., on silica gel with petroleum ether (60-90°C) – ethyl formate – formic acid 75:25:2, detection under UV 366 nm.

For quality control, TLC on silica gel 1) for Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae and the standard hesperidin, first over 3 cm with ethyl acetate – methanol – water 99:17:13 and thenover 8 cm with toluene – ethyl acetate – formic acid – water 95:45:5:3, detection by spraying with 2 % aluminium chloride in ethanol and viewing under UV 366 nm; 2) for Schisandra Chinensis and the standard schizandrin A, with the upper phase of petroleum ether (30-60 °C) – ethyl formate – formic acid 15:5:1, detection under UV 254 nm; 3) for Crataegus pinnatifida and the standard ursolic acid, with toluene – ethyl acetate – formic acid – water 39:8:2:1, detection by spraying with 10 % sulfuric acid in ethanol and heating at 80 °C, detection under UV 366 nm. Quantification of tenuifolin by HPLC.

Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 275 nm. The hRF value for naringin was 46. Linearity was in the range of 100-1000 ng/zone. The intermediate/interday/intra-day precisions were below 2 % (n=6). The LOD and LOQ were 37 and 111 ng/zone, respectively. The average recovery was 99.5 %.

Ganoderma lucidum is a class of medicinal fungi considered by TCM physicians as the “god medicine” effective for inhibiting tumors, reducing free radicals, slowing down aging, improving the immunity, and having anti inflammation, hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic effects. Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide is one of the most effective compounds of Ganoderma lucidum. Compared to GC and HPLC, this TLC method has the advantage of simpler sample preparation and multiple sample analysis which makes it more feasible. TLC of the hydrolysate of the sample and of standards glucose, L-rhamnose monohydrate, galactose, mannose and glucuronic acid on microcrystalline cellulose phase, with n-butanol – ethyl acetate – pyridine – water 6:1:5:4 (optimized from 6 different mobile phase systems), first run over 2 cm and second run over 8 cm. Detection by spraying with a solution of o-phthalic acid – n-butanol saturated with water – aniline 16:1000:9 and heating at 110 °C for 5 min and viewing in daylight.
