Jinwu Gutong Jiaonang capsules are a TCM preparation for nourishing liver and kidney, activating blood, prescribed to treat rheumatic arthralgia, osteoporosis, lumbago and limb numbness, impotence etc. For quality control, HPTLC of icariin on silica gel with chloroform – methanol – water 27:12:4, detection by spraying with 10 % sulfuric acid in ethanol and heating at 105 °C until the zones are visible.

Quinofuracins A–E, novel β-D-galactofuranosylated anthraquinone derivatives (aglycone moiety is averantin for A–C, 5’-oxoaverantin for D, versicolorin-B for E), were isolated from the fungus Staphylotrichum boninense PF1444 by partitioning, between water and ethyl acetate, of residues of acetone – water (2:1) extracts of solid cultures. TLC on silica gel with chloroform – methanol – acetic acid 1000:100:3, to monitor the isolation of quinofuracins A–E (determined by NMR) by two-step column chromatography of the organic fraction. The hRf values were 15, 39, 16, 11 and 25, respectively. Compounds A-C were shown to induce p53-dependent growth suppression in human glioblastoma LNZTA3 cells.

Lipid A fraction was isolated from Escherichia coli strain W3110 and from its plasmid-transformed derivatives HW000, HW001 and HW002 through an adapted three-step version of the Bligh and Dyer’s method. To control the transformation, TLC of the lipid extract, dissolved in chloroform – methanol 4:1, on silica gel with chloroform – methanol – water – ammonia 40:25:4:2. Detection by spraying with 10 % sulfuric acid in ethanol and heating at 175 °C; lipids were visualized as dark zones. Lipid A (hRf 40) was well separated from monophosphoryl lipid A (MPLA) (hRf 60) and from pentaacylated MPLA (hRf 50)._x000D_

      Comparative study of three Marantodes pumilum varieties by microscopy, spectroscopy and chromatography

Detection by dipping into a mixture of p-anisaldehyde and sulfuric acid reagent, followed by heating at 100 ºC for 10 min. Qualitative evaluation under UV light at 254 and 366 nm. M. pumilum var. pumila leaves differ from the other two varieties based on the presence of an orange band at hRF 22 or 56. The stem extract of M. pumilum var. alata had the least intense orange band at either hRF 22 or 56. A peak at hRf 22 appeared as a major compound of the stem of M. pumilum varieties in the order of var. lanceolata > var. pumila > var. alata, and can be used for quality control and identification of different parts of the plant materials.
