A rapid method with minimum sample preparation, has been developed for detection of 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furfural. The high throughput and sensitivity of the method suggest wide application to a variety of dextrose-containing parenteral solutions which require 5-HMF testing.

Detection by dipping first into KOH in methanol and then into a freshly prepared solution of 25 mg p-nitrobenzene-diazonium fluoborate in 90 mL acetone plus 10 mL of diethylene glycol. Quantification by densitometry at the wavelengths of maximum absorbance for each compound, as determined from the in-situ spectra recorded from 400-700 nm.
