      Practical aspects of the adsorption chromatography of synthetic polymers

TLC and HPTLC of polystyrene, poly(ethylene glycol), and polyvinylpyrrolidone on alumina and silica gel with i.a. cyclohexane - benzene - acetone 12:1:1. Detection by spraying with a 1.6% solution of potassium permanganate in concentrated sulfuric acid and heating at 180°C for 10-15 min. resp. by spraying with a 5% solution of iodine in chloroform. TLC of homopolymers is possible by addition of an adsorption-active component to the mobile phase.

      TLC/IR (UATR) off-line coupling for the characterization of additives in EPDM rubber compositions

TLC of additives such as paraffinic oil (1), stearic acid (2), 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (3), and tetramethylthiuram disulfide (4) in rubber compositions of ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) on silica gel with hexane – diethyl ether – acetic acid 14:6:1. After developing, the plate was heated at 105 ºC for 30 min and then cooled at room temperature. Detection by spraying with 1 % solution of 2,6-di-chloro-para-chloro benzoquinine imine in ethanol. The hRF values for (1) to (4) were 10, 65, 37 and 14, respectively.

Large pore silica (120 A) on glass support can be regenerated with strong acids + oxidizers followed by heating at high temperatures. Use of the layer material demonstrated with rat brain lipids chromatographed two-dimensionally with 1) chloroform - methanol - benzene NH3, 60:30:10:6 and 2) chloroform - methanol - acetone - benzene - acetic acid - water 70:30:5:10:4:1; with sea grass lipids using similar solvent systems and with polystyrenes separated with CCl4 - heptane - MEK 10:9:1.

      Application of TLC for the investigation of separation of some isomeric Naphthalene derivatives

Two less polar solvents were mixed 1:1 and a third, more polar solvent added to the mixture to produce mole fractions between 0.1 and 0.9. Chromatographic parameters evaluated via Rm values. For the separation of 1,4- and 1,5-isomers of naphthalene compounds on silica, carbon tetrachloride - chloroform 1:1 with the addition of 0.5 - 0.7 mole fractions of methanol or acetone were found most suitable.
