      Characterization of aminothriphenylmethane dyes by TLC coupled with surface-enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy

      J. Planar Chromatogr. 10, 10-17 (1997). Use of surface-enhanced resonance Raman (SERR) spectroscopy for selective detection of structurally similar aminotriphenylmethane dyes separated by TLC. In situ SERR spectra were recorded with a multichannel micro-Raman spectrometer after the application of colloidal silver solution to the analyte spots. Good-quality SERR spectra recorded for dyes separated by TLC enabled the mutual discrimination of the dyes. The limits of identification of the TLC -SERRS method (ca 5 ng applied) were sufficient for acquisition of spectra of impurities present in the (certified) dye standards. TLC on silica with 1-butanol - acetic acid - water 10:1:2 for the separation of crystal and ethyl violet and the same eluent 10:2:4 for the separation of malachite and brilliant green. Quantification by densitometry.

An analogous transverse elution was undertaken after 5 min and 1, 3, 7, and 9 days. The paper suggests that the green colored spots on the silica gel layer with fluorescence indicator are due to the incorporation of Zn2+ in the compounds.
