      A new chromogenic reagent for carbamate insecticides

      J. Planar Chromatogr. 29, 477-479 (2016). HPTLC of baygon (1), carbaryl (2) and carbofuran (3) on silica gel with hexane ‒ ethyl acetate 9:1. Detection by spraying with 10 % sodium hydroxide solution followed by o-toluidine reagent (5 g o-toluidine dissolved in 14 mL HCl and filled up to 100 mL with distilled water) combined with 10 % sodium nitrate. The hRF values were 48 (orange) and 51 (faint violet) for (1), 46 (orange) for (2) and 46 (violet) and 49 (violet) for (3). _x000D_

      Determination of carbamate insecticides in water by C-18 solid phase extraction and quantitative HPTLC

HPTLC of N-methyl carbamate insecticides on silica; with toluene - acetone 4:1 for carbaryl, carbofuran, methiocarb; with hexane - acetone - chloroform 75:15:10 for propoxur. Detection by dipping first into KOH in methanol and then into a freshly prepared solution of 25 mg p-nitrobenzene-diazonium fluoborate in 90 mL acetone plus 10 mL of diethylene glycol. Quantification by densitometry at the wavelengths of maximum absorbance for each compound, as determined from the in-situ spectra recorded from 400-700 nm.

      Analyst 119, 415-416 (1994). TLC of carbaryl and the hydrolysis product of carbaryl, 1-naphthol, on silica with hexane - acetone 4:1 in a saturated chamber. Detection after drying by spraying with 10% sodium hydroxide solution, followed by freshly prepared 1% ammonium cerium(IV) nitrate reagent. A violet spot was observed; on spraying with 10% sodium nitrite solution the intensity of the colour increased. The sensitivity of the reagent is abt. 0.1 µg.
