Description of a sample preparation technique rendering alkaloid fractions suitable for TLC or GC determination of toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids from various plant sources. The procedure includes the reduction of the alkaloid N-oxides with the oxygen-absorbing resin and a clean-up with strong cation exchange solid phase columns, as well as an enrichment of the alkaloids if desired.
