      Optimization of separation of lypophylic fractions of hydrobionts by thin-layer chromatography

For hydrocarbons (hexadecylbenzene, dimethyl naphthalene, phenanthrene and 3,4 a-benzopyrene) the selectivity does not change with the grain diameter of the sorbent (5 - 25 µm). The Rf-value is markedly influenced by chamber saturation and specific surface areas. Plates containing a silicium acid sol as binder may be used 10 - 12 times after regeneration (increase of reproducibility).

      HPLC and TLC identification of nitrogen-containing polynuclear aromatic compounds in airborne particulate matter

TLC of nitro- and azaarenes (nitronaphthalene, nitrofluorene, nitroanthracene, nitropyrene, quinoline, azafluorene, benzo(h)quinoline) on silica with acetonitrile - water 9:1 for nitroarenes and methanol - water for azaarenes. Detection under UV 254 and 366 nm and by spraying with specific reagents for the detection of functional groups: 15 % tin(II) chloride in 36 % hydrochloric acid and p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde for nitroarenes and Dragendorff's reagent for azaarenes. Detection limit for nitroarenes 25 - 100 ng, for azaarenes 50 - 100 ng.

      Fluorescence lifetime measurements of pyrene on HPTLC plates

      Two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography of polyaromatic hydrocarbons measured by absorption, fluorescence, and chemiluminescence

      J. Planar Chromatogr. 28, 139-143 (2015). TLC of 16 polyaromatic hydrocarbons on RP-18 phase. In the first direction, the plate is developed twice with n-pentane at -20 °C, and in the second direction with acetonitrile - methanol - water 12:8:3:3. Both developments were carried out over a distance of 43 mm. Detection by chemiluminescence: a solution of 225 mg Bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)oxalate dissolved in 45 mL of n-butyl acetate was prepared. 125 μL hydrogen peroxide 30 % were vigorously shaken with this solution for 20 min. The mixture is suitable for chemiluminescence measurements within a period of 48 h. The best results were observed when the plate was dipped in this solution for 1 s and dried until no light reflection could be seen on the surface. Then, the TLC plate was covered by a glass plate and measured for 1 min using a very light-sensitive CCD camera. The proposed chemiluminescence screening method is able to separate PAHs from PAH oxidation products and detects benzo[a]pyrene and perylene with a LOD of 95 pg/band for benzo[a]pyrene and 48 pg/band for perylene. Although these compounds were separated from all other PAHs in the standard, a separation of both compounds was not possible from one another.

Normal and reversed-phase HPTLC with homologous series of hydrocarbons and n-alcohols as the mobile phases. Discussion of the electrostatic interactions operating in these chromatographic systems by studying the relationship between the log 1/Rf values and the molecular polarizability of solutes and solvents.

Charge Transfer Chromatography on caffeine - impregnated HPTLC silica is a simple, efficient and very precise system for a rapid separation of the six PAHs (BaP, BbF, BhF, BP, IP, and F), which have become subject of different laws and regulations in West Germany. Quantitative determination of precooled plates at -20°C with dichloromethane. Detection limit 100 pg/spot (500 pg/spot for fluoranthene). A post-treatment with paraffin - hexane was performed in order to stabilize the fluorescence intensity of the zones. Selective detection by variation of excitation wavelength and fluorescence measurement conditions, enables a significant enhancement of selectivity and sensitivity.
