Part III: Effect of solvent polarity on the selectivity of nitromethane for discriminating between alternant versus non alternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Appl. Spectrosc. 47, 715-722 (1993). Investigation of the effect on the fluorescence emission behavior of 96 different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) dissolved in binary toluene/acetonitrile solvent mixtures, to better assess the applicability of nitromethane as a selective quenching agent for alternant versus non alternant PAHs in TLC, as well as in HPLC. Discussion of the results which revealed that the "selective quenching" rule is obeyed for the majority of PAHs.

      J. Planar Chromatogr. 10, 358-361 (1997). TLC of seven PAHs (7-, 8-hydroxy-, trans-7,8-, trans-9,10-dihydroxybenzo(a)pyrene, benzo(a)pyrene, 1,2,5,6-dibenzanthracene, chrysene) on cellulose acetate with various solvent systems and application of principal-components analysis (PCA) to the experimental results in order to find the optimum solvent system for the separation of the hydrocarbons of interest.

The effect of electric fields on solute migration and mixture separation in TLC
      I. MALINOWSKA*, J.K. ROZYLO, A. KRASON, (*Fac. of Chem., Dept. of Planar Chromatography, M. Curie-Sklodowska Univ., M. Curie-Sklodowska Sq. 3, 20-031 Lublin, Poland)

      J. Planar Chromatogr. 15, 418-424 (2002). TLC of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons and quinoline derivatives on silica gel, alumina, silanized silica gel, RP-18, polyamide, and cellulose, developed in sandwich chambers both in the presence of an electric field and in its absence. The mobil phases were pure organic solvents such as n-hexane, n-heptane, carbon tetrachloride, methylcyclohexane, ethyl methyl ketone, and carbon tetrachoride - ethyl methyl ketone in different proportions. Electric fields affect the retention of chromatographed solutes and the surface properties of a stationary phase.

Anna SOBANSKA*, J. PYZOWSKI (*Department of Analytical Chemistry, Medical University of Lodz, ul. Muszynskiego 1, 90-151 Lodz, Poland, anna.sobanska@umed.lodz.pl)

      J. Planar Chromatogr. 25, 344-348 (2012). HPTLC of two oil-soluble sunscreens, namely avobenzone (1) and octyl salicylate (2) and a water-soluble sunscreen, namely phenylbenzimidazol sulfonic acid (3) on silica gel with cyclohexane - diethyl ether 5:1 for (1) and (2) and ethyl acetate - ethanol - water 14:7:6 for (3). Quantitative determination by absorbance measurement at 300 nm for (2) and (3), and 360 nm for (1). Limits of detection and quantification were found to be 30 and 80 ng/zone for (1), and 20 and 60 ng/zone for both (2) and (3).
