      Application of TLC and topological indices to investigation of the hydrophobic effect of selected isomeric naphthalene derivatives

      Budapest Chromatography Symposium, June 13 (1985). TLC study of the hydrophobic properties of isomeric naphthols: alpha-naphthol, beta-naphthol, 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene and 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene. Results show that naphthols with the OH-group in positions 2- and 2,7- exhibit lower hydrophobic properties than those with OH in positions 1- and 1,5-. TLC on silica with benzene - acetone 7:3. Detection with 0.005 % aq. new fuchsine solution.

      Chromatographic investigation of the hydrophobicity of isomeric dihydroxyanthraquinones

TLC of dihydroxyanthraquinones (1,2-, 1,4-, 1,5-, 1,8, 2,6-) on Kieselguhr G impregnated with paraffin oil and binary mixtures of methanol and water 10:0, 9:1, 8:2, 7:3 and on cellulose with methanol - water 9:1. Detection under UV 254 nm (on Kieselguhr) and by spraying with 0.005% aqueous new fuchsin solution (on cellulose).

      Characterization of some dibenzo crown ethers by RPTLC

TLC of dibenzo-18-crown-6, 4,5(5')-di-tert-butyldibenzo-18-crown-6, dibenzo-16-crown-5, 4,5(5')-di-tert-butyldibenzo-16-crown-5, dibenzo-14-crown-4, 4,5(5')-di-tert-butyldibenzo-14-crown-4, 4,5(5')-di-tert-butyldibenzo-24-crown-8, and dibenzo-24-crown-8 on RP-2, RP-18, or NH2 with methanol - water, isopropanol - hexane, isopropanol - water in different ratios or acetonitrile. The best separations were observed with mobile phases containing 80-90% methanol. Visualization by exposure to iodine vapor and under UV 254 nm. - Separation on RP-18 confirms the order of hydrophobicity of the investigated crown ethers.

      Normal- and reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography of selected calixarenes and pyrene

HPTLC and TLC of calix[4]arene, 4-tert-butyl-calix[4]arene tribenzoate, 4-tert-butylcalix[5]arene, and pyrene on silica gel and RP-18 W at constant temperature with methanol, ethanol, acetonitrile, and their binary mixtures with water (from 0 to 100%). The best separation of calixarenes was obtained on RP-18 W with acetonitrile - water 9:1. Visualization of pyrene under UV 366 nm and of calixarenes by use of a 20% solution of perchloric acid in water.
