Description of a modified flatbed scanner for documentation and measurement of compounds detected as dark zones on a fluorescent background by irradiation of a layer containing a luminophor with shortwave UV radiation, termed i.a. fluorescence quench detection. HPTLC of famotidine on silica gel with ethyl acetate - methanol - toluene - conc. aqueous ammonia 40:25:20:2 with saturation and of caffeine in cola with ethyl acetate - methanol 19:1. Precision, linearity, and detection limits of famotidine and caffeine were determined. The modified office scanner in connection with Sorbfill software demonstrated the ability to quantify pharmaceuticals and food samples in chromatograms containing zones that quench fluorescence under UV at 254 nm on layers with an indicator.
