      Comparative evaluation of TLC and HPTLC plates containing standard and enhanced UV indicators for efficiency, resolution, detection, and densitometric quantification using fluorescence quenching

      J. Liq. Chrom. Rel. Technol. 27, 1993-2002 (2004). Commercially precoated TLC and HPTLC silica gel plates, with enhanced brightness UV indicator were compared with comparable plates formulated with standard indicators. Results showed that the increased UV indicator plates had visually brighter backgrounds, however, the limits of detection did not improve. HPTLC and TLC on silica gel of caffeine and acetaminophen with ethyl acetate - glacial acetic acid 19:1, and salicylamide with methylene chloride - acetone 4:1 in a twin-trough chamber containing a saturation pad. Quantitative determination at 254 nm.

      The influence of perchlorate ion concentration on the retention of fluoroquinolones in RP-TLC

Five amphoteric piperazynyl fluoroquinolones and flumequine were analyzed in an RP system on C8 plates with acetonitrile/aqueous acidic mobile phases containing various concentrations of potassium perchlorate. Perchlorate as a so-called chaotropic ion caused the increase in the retention of basic fluoroquinolones. TLC of sarafloxacin, difloxacin, norfloxacin, enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and flumequine on RP-8 with acetonitrile - water containing constant concentration of citric acid but various concentrations of potassium perchorate. After air-drying, fluoroquinolone zones were detected at 366 nm and 254 nm and flumequine only at 254 nm. The retention increased with the increasing concentrations of perchlorate ion in the mobile phase and achieved a plateau for the mobile phases containing 10-20 mM of chaotropic perchlorate.

      Determination of the lipophilicity of some non-ionic surfactants

Determination of the lipophilicity of 17 non-ionic tensides (nonphenyl and tributylphenyl ethylene oxide oligomers) by RPTLC with methanol , ethanol , and 1-propanol as organic modifiers of the aqueous mobile phase. Rm values decreased linearly with increasing concentrations of organic modifier. TLC on silica impregnated by overnight predevelopment with hexane - paraffin oil 95:5, and aqueous methanol, ethanol and 1-propanol (various alcohol concentrations). Adaption of the new retention model primarily established for reverse phase liquid chromatographic systems employing tetrahydrofuran - water and acetone - water mobile phases to the description of solute retention in analogous systems utilizing phosphate buffer instead of water. The basic physical relationships of this approach have been very carefully tested by experiment. Excellent agreement found between theory and practice of the phenomena considered.

      A new approach to separation number in planar chromatography

      J. Planar Chromatogr. 13, 290-295 (2000). Investigation of the hydrolytic cleavage of the 3-cyanopropyl and diol ligands from the silica gel matrix surface. Hydrolytic cleavage was induced by use of mobile phases comprising mixtures of methanol, water, and buffers of different pH. CN- and diol-type polar ligands are less susceptible to hydrolytic cleavage than apolar (C 8 and C 18) ligands. The difference can probably be explained by use of an ion-exclusion mechanism.
